Women’s erotica is making the news with books such as Fifty Shades of Grey flying off the shelves. But aside from escapism and eye-candy, such erotica can be something that can also be transformative and artful – exactly what Cliterature strives to be.
Cliterature, an annual event that will be held this year at The Chrysalids Theatre on January 24-25, began with a simple question: would women read erotica in public? The answer – most definitely yes. The two-day event will feature erotic readings, film, photography, music and dance, giving women the space to express themselves freely – unrehearsed and uncensored. And the event has never been a place where the audience passively watches – it will change them in a way that will give them inspiration and empowerment.
The proceeds of this weekend-long event will benefit Planned Parenthood Waterloo Region. This festival is a grassroots event which has grown over the last decade mainly through word of mouth, attracting women and a LGBTQ audience – but all are welcome to experience the transformative art.
