Once: The Musical started out as a movie that cost only $150,000 and took 17 days to shoot. It went on to gross $20 million worldwide and win an Oscar. The movie stars Glen Hansard, from the popular Irish Rock band The Frames, and Markéta Irglová. Hansard and Irglová, who wrote the music and lyrics, won the 2007 Academy Award for Best Original song for “Falling Slowly” and the Los Angeles Film Critics Award for Best Music. The soundtrack was also nominated for two Grammy Awards.

Once tells the story of an Irish musician and a Czech immigrant drawn together by their shared love of music. Over the course of one fateful week, their unexpected friendship and collaboration evolves into a powerful but complicated romance, heightened by the raw emotion of the songs they create together.
This musical is unique: the cast acts, sings, dances, and plays their own instruments (making them the orchestra).  The cast also stays on stage for the entire show.
The choreography is also not what you’d expect for a musical. The show’s choreographer, Steven Hoggett, is known for his choreography and movement direction in American Idiot, Black Watch, and Rocky: The Musical.  (He’s also associate director for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, opening in London’s West End this coming summer.) His approach to choreography is not as planned as one assumes.
“Until I’ve met the actors, I don’t know what we’re going to do – and then I build on their bodies. Those actors have to perform the movement, rather than just dance it. I don’t refer to them as dancers,” he said in a 2013 Globe & Mail interview.
The Globe & Mail described the show as “the rare Broadway musical that is characterized by absence and leaves room for silence.” The Chicago Tribune says, “There are plenty of romantic Broadway musicals, but Once is part of a much smaller & more rarified group: musicals that are actually wise about the joys & anguish of life & love.”
