OnStage is our popular music series where both the audience and the musicians share our Main Stage. We’ve just announced our first two acts for the 16/17 series: Country/folk singer Donovan Woods and Celtic/folk group The Once.
Donovan Woods
With JUNO nominee Donovan Woods, it’s hard to know where the line that divides country and folk actually is. Like with so many songwriters of note, what matters isn’t what you call it or where it comes from, but the stories you tell and the voice you use.
Some of Donovan Woods’ songs have already been covered by the likes of Tim McGraw, Lady Antebellum’s Charles Kelley, Billy Currington, and Alan Doyle. This gifted singer-songwriter just released his fourth album, Hard Settled, Ain’t Troubled, a few months ago. He also recently signed on to Warner/Chappell Music, the global music publishing company of Warner Music Group.
Some readers may remember that Donovan Woods opened up for Matt Anderson earlier this year. Woods will be back on Wednesday, October 26. He possesses a voice made to tell stories – his stories, and ours – and one that can’t be ignored. Buy your tickets here.
The Once
Geraldine Hollett, Andrew Dale, and Phil Churchill make up the Newfoundland-based trio The Once. According to the Globe and Mail, “These three Newfoundlanders gracefully and evocatively offer gem-like maritime music – foot-stomping shanties, heart-rendering ballads, salt-aired interpretations (of Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen tunes) and a cappella three-part harmonies […].”
With beautiful harmonies and a Celtic feel in much of their music, they are quickly gaining recognition around the world. When they released their fourth album, Departures, in 2014, they embarked on a seven-month world tour opening for English singer-songwriter Passenger. You’ll have a good time at their OnStage concert on Thursday, November 3. Get your tickets here.
