3 Doors Down is in Town in March
Singers of “Kryptonite” and “Hear Without You” touring for 5th album
3 Doors Down was formed in 1996 in Escatawpa, Mississippi, a small town of about 8,000 people (though Billboard argues the group began in 1994 when the original trio played in a friend’s backyard). Since then, it has sold 20 million albums worldwide. The group’s current members are Brad Arnold, Chet Roberts, Chris Henderson, Justin Biltonen, and Greg Upchurch.
So which songs brought them so much fame? You likely know them.
“Kryptonite” spent 53 weeks on the Billboard charts, peaking at #3. According to Brad in an interview on songfacts.com, he wrote the “Kryptonite” drumbeat and lyrics in math class when he was 15. The song asks if you’ll still be there not just when things go bad, but when they’re also going well. Remember it? Here it is:

“Hear Without You” peaked at #5 and spent 51 weeks on the charts. In another songfacts.com interview, Brad says this song is actually meant to be a happy one, about how the person who’s not there is in your dreams at night. Over the years, it’s become a favourite with military personnel, too. Happy or sad, it’ll get your tears flowing either way:

And we can’t forget “When I’m Gone,” which spent 45 weeks on the charts and peaked at #4. In the songfacts.com interview for this one, Brad explains he had intended for it to mean that love continues no matter what distance or how many obstacles are in the way. Although the song wasn’t written with any military meaning behind it, 3 Doors Down dedicated it to the US military. It became popular around the time the US was preparing to invade Iraq.
